In a world often characterisd by superficiality and glamour, former Vogue model Jenny Guinness, also known as Windsor Elliott, embarked on a profound journey of spiritual awakening when she encountered artist Salvador Dali’s pet cheetah in Paris. Her story offers a unique perspective on the quest for the meaning of life, the significance of identity, and the role of the Christian faith in finding meaning and purpose. This article delves deep into Jenny’s captivating journey, exploring the pivotal moments that transformed her life.
1. From Vogue to Spiritual Quest
Jenny Guinness’s journey begins with a serendipitous entry into the fashion industry. As a University of Southern California student, she stumbled into modeling, initially viewing it as a summer job as she wanted to eventually become a lawyer.
Known as “Windsor Elliott”, Jenny embraced the alias while residing with a loving family in San Francisco, taking the youngest child’s name Windsor and Elliott, based on her favourite poet T.S. Eliot, adding an extra ‘l’ and ‘t’ for flair.
In early years, Jenny was no stranger to adversity which led her to ask deep questions about life and meaning. Growing up in a troubled family, Jenny became a ward of the state of California when her parents could not settle their custody dispute. She reflects,

In early years, Jenny was no stranger to adversity which led her to ask deep questions about life and meaning. Growing up in a troubled family, Jenny became a ward of the state of California when her parents could not settle their custody dispute. She reflects,
“That period of my life threw up a series of questions that settled down for decades until my New York days.”
Jenny would continue her modelling journey in the 60s and 70s, travelling the world, finding herself on the cover of Vogue and working with some of the world’s top photographers in the fashion industry.
2. The Cheetah’s Message
A pivotal moment in Jenny’s life occurred at a party in Paris at artist’s Salvador Dali’s apartment at the Le Meurice Hotel. Surrounded by storied writers, playwrights and socialites, her eyes became transfixed on Salvador Dali’s pet cheetah working his way through the illustrious guests.

This magnificent creature, declawed and distorted, served as a catalyst for her spiritual search. Jenny reflects,
“I suddenly had this stabbing feeling that this magnificent creature was made a caricature of what he had been created to be.”
The encounter left her feeling as though she was peering into the abyss of absurdity and meaninglessness. At that point, Jenny realised she needed to embark on a spiritual search to find meaning and purpose.
3. The Quest for Spirituality
Jenny’s quest led her to a woman with a reputation for understanding of spiritual matters who lived on Park Avenue and introduced her to unconventional practices including conjuring up dead spirits. However, her discomfort with these sessions eventually led her to discontinue her participation. She recalls a simple prayer she gave while finishing one of these sessions,
“If there is a God, I can’t find you. If there is a God, will you find me?”
Soon after, she had the unexpected arrival of her mother, a recent convert to Christianity from the occult which marked a turning point in finding Christ. While Jenny’s mother was staying with her in her New York apartment, she had some of her mother’s friends visit and while they were looking at the “Windsor Elliot” modelling portfolio, Jenny heard a huge gasp from the guests. Startled by their reaction, the man began to share that six months ago, the couple had been in Seattle and before going to a prayer meeting had stopped at a supermarket to get a coffee. While waiting at the checkout, the Lord had spoke to them and said,
“Buy that magazine on display in front of you and pray for the girl on the cover.”
They told her they had been praying for her for six months. This opened up Jenny’s heart to ask this couple a year’s worth of questions as they continued to visit and share their Christian faith with her. Jenny observes that their answers ‘fit like a hand in a glove’, explaining the glory and creativity she had witnessed in the fashion world alongside the horrors she had witnessed as a child.
4. Identity, Self-Worth, and Mental Health
The Christian couple eventually invited her to an evangelistic event at Maddison Square Garden. The speaker referenced Jesus’ words in John 3 “You must be born again, flesh gives birth to flesh. It is the spirit which gives birth to the spirit.”
“I felt that was what I was looking for the whole time, the whole time that my spirit was starving.”
Jenny decided to give her life to Christ that night, embracing her new identity in Christ. She reflects on a recent study that links mental health issues to the fashion industry and shares the importance of addressing these issues.
“A reductionist ideology of a person defines a person down, but the Christian Jewish view of a human personality defines it up.”
Jenny discusses the four essentials for human survival: meaning, relationship, future, and hope. She emphasises the concept of connectedness and shares her personal journey of finding meaning through her belief in being made in the image of God.

“The question is, are we serving an idle image or is the imagness of God anchoring us to be who we are created to be?”
Jenny Guinness’s journey from the world of high fashion to a deeper understanding of faith and purpose is a remarkable narrative of self-discovery. Her story teaches us that amidst life’s challenges, finding meaning and purpose in Christ is not an unattainable goal but a journey we can all embark upon.
